@DrDeathRNMD98 actually, i believed the aunt was a good person at first, but the war gradually turned her into a greedy woman. You can tell when the two finally leave, and she looks back at them and wonders if she did the right thing or not; getting rid of two children for the sake of her own. Obviously, it was a bad choice as it turns out...

Happens all the time in cities nowadays. But this was immediately post-WWII Japan. There was so much death and starvation. It de-sensitizes people.

god, when my friend first told me about this movie we were in middle school and i told myself i would never watch it becasue i hated watching people die, especially little kids, and then 2 years later i finally watched it and i was crying the whole time T.T

This is so sad. When I first watched the opening scene I thought it was sad. After watching the whole movie and watching the opening again.... It's heart breaking.
