This video is of the BMX Bike Park that has spent the summers of 2007 and 2008 set up for kids to ride free at the City of Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation Wallace Emerson Community Centre, 1260 Dufferin St, Toronto.
The park has to be moved to make way for the winter skating rink that the park has been set up on. A significant challenge for this park at this location has been the lack of drainage on the outdoor rink pad. This has led to a toll being taken on the life of the ramps due to dampness, and has resulted in many events and BMX class having to be cancelled due to wet weather.. Having said this.. the benefits have far outweighed the challenges.. read on!
This video was recorded on Nov 3, 2008 by the toronto Crime Stoppers Community Youth Officer Scott Mills. The BMX ramps are being moved into storage by NFM Trucking and city of Toronto Recreationist Al Crawford, along with the help of Scott Mills and several BMX Riders volunteering to help out.
There are two events upcoming that celebrate the life and future of this BMX Bike Park
1. Dec 7th, 2008 - Young Presidents Organization Xmas Party at Ricoh Coliseum, Toronto - a demonstration of ramp building, professional BMX riding and legal graffiti art on the ramps will be showcase at this event with the hope of eventually having an indoor action sports centre that includes all of this and more.
2. TorontoBMX Jam 2009 will occur at the Direct Energy Centre, CNE Grounds in March, 2009 as part of the Toronto International Bicycle Show. Pros and Amateur riders from across North America will be in attendance.
In the interim, the ramps are being stored at Lamport Stadium under the stands, unable to be used by the many youth that find enjoyment and skills development from the park.
This BMX Bike Park and this YouTube account has been one of the reasons why Toronto Crime Stoppers have set all time records for the # of anonymous tips received into their program designed to prevent and solve crime. Upwards of 700 tips per month are now being received.. an increase of over 70 per month .. from before the partner officers of the Crime Stopers program were involved in youth engagement projects such as this.
Any person watching this video that is interested in providing some funding for this project is encouraged to contact Mike Heaton, Al Crawford or Scott Mills - cell 416-434-3002.
