Beage designed the Bulldog for the RAF as a replacement for the aging De Havilland Chipmunk trainer. The prototype flew on 19th May 1969 at Shorham and showed great promise. Unfortunately Beagle went bust in 1970, but Scottish Aviation steppedin and acquired the development and manufacturing rights. In 1971, production of the Bulldog began and large orders from all over the world flooded in.
The RAF ordered 130 in 1972 and used the type as a primary flight aptitude trainer for flying cadets in University Air Squadrons, a role the Bulldog was to perform until 2000.
After their retirement from the RAF, many Bulldogs were auctioned off and enthusiasticlly snapped up by civilians. One of these buyers was the Duke of Hamilton, who flies over the museum and displays his Bulldog today on this video.
