John Paul IIs beatification process is generating great expectation. Even though we still await the decree, this Servant of God is already venerated in many parts of the world. In Brazil, there is a man who is especially devoted to John Paul II: Bishop Fernando Guimarães, from the Diocese of Garanhuns. When he came to Rome in 1980, he was a young priest with a unique mission: to teach the Polish Pope Portuguese, who at the time was about to embark on his first trip to Brazil. The young priests relationship with the Pontiff went beyond the classroom, and it turned out that he remained in Rome, working with the Congregation for the Clergy until the end of John Paul IIs pontificate. Today, Bishop Fernando recalls John Paul II with much gratitude.I cherish the memory of John Paul II with a profound sentiment of admiration, and I would say a profound veneration as a Servant of God. Today, he is a saint, the Holy Father and a holy father, a model for bishops, from whom we can all draw inspiration.
