You mean when Sawyer and Jack are sitting in the forest? I made two video layers masked negative around Jack on one of them then moved the other one to the side using pan/crop. Then faded both of the layers together. Hopefully not too technical ;D

Could I do this with the cheap version of Sony 9?

No I don't think you can use masking in the cheaper version. You could try the cookie cutter effect though instead might work just as well.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for this version, and what is it called? And how much of a difference are the edits than the cheaper version?

I downloaded the free trial as it is very expensive around 400 pounds. It's called "Sony Vegas Pro 9" Sony Vegas Movie Studio is the cheaper version you can get that for around 70 pounds. The difference isn't that big really you just can't use masking and there are only two video tracks avaliable at a time but for the average vidder you won't notice much of a difference.
