First test of my beacon on the air. I'm listening its signal 25 KM from the beacon QTH with a simple telescoping antenna.

  • Hi Mr. iw3fzq. My brother have a DEGEN DE1103 and me a KAITO KA1102. In our " DX field day", my radio tune 8.662 Mhz, SSB HAM transmissions and the 1103 don't. Why this? Great video, i like all it yours. Thank you very much. Sandro from Brazil.

  • Hi Sandro, probably your Kaito has a low frequency image rejection and when it receives a very strong signal in a HAM band you tune the same information (with lower signal) in other frequency. It is normal in a low cost receiver. Probably the Degen has the same defect but in a different frequency. Enrico.

  • Great video, the Degen is a really nice little receiver. I'll listen out for that beacon.

  • Hello Peter. The Degen is a good but not wonderful receiver. Its sensitivity is poor under 300 kHz and it has a chirping BFO. However the quality/price ratio is very good!

  • Nice video BTW. Will have to listen for the Beacon. Also, I participate in the WSPRnet . org website (usually for 160m and also 10m bands only) which supports web-reporting of WSPR (Weak Signal Propagation Reporting) beaconing stations ... 73s

The Degen 1103 uses an UP converting mixer so the first IF is 55 MHz or so and the other receiver is a simple down converting IF to 455 kHz (vs 55 MHz or so used in the 1103).

Images occur 2 x 455 kHz (.910 MHz or thereabouts) above the actual transmitting frequency of station for a simple receiver like the 1102 ... the 1103 image freq theoretically would be 2 x 55 MHz (110 MHz) on the other side of the transmitting station's frequency.

  • @iw3fzq

The difference between the two receivers is because the Degen 1103 is an UP converting IF and the other receiver is a simple down converting IF to 455 kHz (vs 55 MHz or so used in the 1103).
