@XularusXIII Sorry this is late. You probably already beat him by now. :)
Back row is when you adjust your party lineup and you double-select a character. It moves their icon from left to slightly right and vice versa to show whether they're front or back row.
Front row characters take normal damage, do normal damage and have normal physical accuracy. Back row is usually reserved for magic-users because they take less damage. Beat Ultros faster than he can kill Banon and you should win. :)

I think the Turks in FF7 were pretty fun too, though Ultros still wins them by far.
