To the viewing audience, please take what you will from this video. It is by no means a perfect performance, and I have been long aware of its flaws. I mean for it to be a tool to others, for the good and the bad. Feel free to listen and notice its strengths and weaknesses and even discuss them with others, but you do not need to offer critique to me, as this video is now over three years old and my voice has changed and developed since then. Thanks! (Lauren - September 2011)

This piece is by Monteverdi, from his lost opera "Ariana".

Lasciatemi morire!
Lasciatemi morire!
E che volete che mi conforte
in così dura sorte,
in così gran martire?
Lasciatemi morire,
Lasciatemi morire!

Let me die!
Let me die!
Why do you want to console me
In such a bitter fate,
In such a great torment?
Let me die,
Let me die!

  • I am only 13 and I have to learn this for my singing lessons...... soo nervous seeing that I barley have any vibration in my voice

  • @crazymelody18 Don't worry about that. At your age, vibrato hasn't usually developed, and a lot of young singers who are trying to force the vibrato into the sound actually do unhealthy things to their voices.

I actually didn't have any vibrato going into college. My high school choir teacher essentially trained it out of me, and then I had my tonsils out when I graduated. And at 18, you should have vibrato! So we spent a lot of time trying to get me to sing freely in my first year.

  • @kawiah But you're just 13, and a lot of girls are either still in or coming out of that breathy sound at that point. So just focus on the good breathing and placement I'm sure your teacher is telling you, and let the vibrato come naturally. That's the best thing you can do! If you sing this piece with a clear and free tone, it'll sound beautiful even without vibrato.

  • Your vibrato was shaky and much too tight, and it sometimes affects your pitch. Stand up straight, haha! You're totally leaning. And your mouth is too closed for the beautiful Italian. And you cut off of phrases much too sharply.

-Conservatory student performing this song who has had teachers critcally bash it for hours

  • @AuiaRose

lol, Thanks for the pointers. I certainly sing this song better than I used to. I remember when it felt really high for me.

Are you still in conservatory? Where do you go?

  • im doing this piece for school & i was having trouble with expressing the sadness of the song . after watching this it helped me understand it more though so thanks (: good job too !

  • @missdjdanga I'm glad this helped you out. That's a large part of why I put my videos on youtube, so that others can learn from it, good and bad. :)

Did your performance turn out well at school?
