Armorer's Course on the legendary M1 Garand, also covers the M1A and the M14. You can find more information at www.AmericanGunsmith.com, or you can call 1-800-797-0867
His use of clip is appropriate. The garand is one of the few times where a "clip" is actually used, aside from weapons which employ stripper clips. In the modern sense, I cannot think of a weapon which doesn't employ magazines unless you count the M1 or SKS.
I am sorry the recoil lug recess on the right of the receiver is very strong. Mr Garand did a test proof with a 124K pressure load. The only damage was a cracked lug on the bolt. To say that part of the receive is week is wrong. The garand is probably the strongest semi auto receiver ever made.
During tests the Garand action was proven able to take up to 120,000 psi, at which point the left lug showed signs of cracking.

Yes, the M14/M1A was designed around the M1 Garand. It's essentially a magazine fed version of it.

Your gunsmith needs to pick up a copy of Hatchers notebook.
