Lester Butler and The Blue Shadows performing their unique arrangement of "I'm Ready" in 1991.

Before signing with Def American Records and being given the name The Red Devils by producer Rick Rubin, Lester Butler's band was known as The Blue Shadows. They were featured in a showcase for new bands at something called The Colvin Convention (?), an event for radio and record companies in Los Angeles in 1991. This clip is from that performance.

  • Too dark, I think this is the KIng King

  • tough rhythm section too, really makes this work, Bill Bateman plays the shit out of this. is that a magnatone or leslie the guitar player is playing thru, or just bad sound? these guys were all about the early T-Birds sound, tho Lester is a total original, one of the best ever,

    miss him!

  • the man was a legend. Simply one of the best "white" blues man. R.I.P Lester and we thank you for what you left us......

  • Hey theres my guy Paul Size !!!!

  • LESTER...YOU DA TONE MONSTER!

try to copy any of his licks...you'll have to start your harp career over peeps...he studied them all WALTER,WALTER,BILLY,JR,WILLIE,AND MORE!!!!....

  • Yes, you're right, this is superb. What a great idea, a Slim Harpo groove with a Muddy/Wille Dixon song.

I might have to 'borrow' this idea. I have a Korg Leslie pedal, it makes a sound just like the guitar here, I love it, it's very tempting to overuse it!

It's a shame about Lester Butler. He obviously loved the blues. I never saw him play, regrettably.

    Many thanks for posting this.

  • Yes, thanks for posting this. Lester was a great musician, what a tragedy losing his life at such a young age.
