I find it disturbing that Republicans and Democrats are unilaterally considering temporarily suspending the fuel tax. I feel this would be destructive except for extreme emergencies. The problem with suspending fuel taxes is it would reduce funding to infrastructure that is desperately needed. Some of our roads and bridges are in desperate need of repair and modernization, the fuel tax is a targeted tax that tax users that use fuel and the roads/infostructure. Another reason that suspending the fuel tax would be disruptive is the higher prices are encouraging people to change their habits (stop being so wasteful and greedy).
Higher fuel prices will encourage companies to develop alternative fuels and technology. Higher fuel prices will discourage the Detroit from producing so many large gasoline guzzlers. Higher fuel prices will discourage people from buying large gasoline guzzlers. Higher fuel prices will help people change their lifestyles to be more conservative.
The prices are liable to get higher in the future, postponing the problems will only make the inevitable bottleneck worse.
I really feel the proposal to suspend fuel taxes is a way for politicians to try to appeal to voters greed to get votes.
