@tenorbanjo4 If you've ever seen music critic Scott Yanow in action at a jam session, you will note that he typically brings a melodica in addition to his tenor sax. The melodica is a modern descendant of the Cousenophone, and sounds about the same.
There are two varieties, one with the mouthpiece on the end, played and held similar to a clarinet (although the keys resemble a piano keyboard), or held out in front and played with a flexible plastic tube.

@MrJnobianchi And yes - that's the solo at 1:57 and more than likely Rollini, who was THE proponent. Goofus is the name his fellow musicians came up with.

Yep- prime early Goodman AND Tommy Dorsey as well.

I never heard a "Goofus"; could it be the instrument starting at 1:57? A Rollini' solo?

@tenorbanjo4 the Goofus was really called a Cousenophone - a real instrument, though went out of fashion really quickly. It's a melodica invented by French firm Cousenon that resembled a sax. When pressed, the buttons actually open up the reeds - and it plays polyphonically, as you can hear.
