  • The chorus of the song is a stanza written by 6th Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, Ven Hui Neng which says:

    Fundamentally no bodhi-tree exists;

    Nor the frame of a mirror bright.;

    Since all is voidness from the beginning,

    Where can the dust alight?

    The above stanza was to rebut a senior monk who earlier wrote:

    The body is a Bodhi tree,

    the mind a standing mirror bright.

    At all times polish it diligently,

    and let no dust alight.

  • 慧能大师:

    菩提本無樹,

    明鏡亦非台;

    本來無一物,

    何處惹塵埃?

    神秀大师:

    身是菩提树,

    心如明镜台;

    时时勤拂拭,

    勿使惹尘埃。
