When the Meigs Field airport's 50-year lease expired in 1996 Mayor Richard M. Daley wanted the Meigs Field gone. He agreed to a compromise extending the airport's life a few years. But on March 31st 30st, 2003 he unilaterally ended the debate. He dispatched a fleet of bulldozers in the middle of the night to dig up the runway. The FAA fined the city $33,000 for closing the airport without notifying them.

Dick Daley committed a felony when he unlawfully destroyed the runway with aircraft on approach. He endangered the live of the people in those planes. Meigs Field had its lease renewed and it wasn't due to expire until 2024. My sister thinks the park was a good idea, but she would not take my nephews there because they handled a lot of jet fuel there. The place still looks like a land fill.
