Finally a new video after many many months! I have been busy with band commitments as well as university, so I haven't had much time to record videos. I decided to record a video of the intro to "A Change of Seasons" by Dream Theater. It's everything before the vocals come in, so it's got the first movement - The Crimson Sunset - as well as the first few bars of the second movement - Innocence.

"A Change of Seasons" is one of the most important songs to me, and I believe it's a very well-written Dream Theater masterpiece. I'm aware that this cover isn't perfect, even though it took me quite some time to get a good take. I usually screw up during the second clean intro riff, but I made it through in this take. That one really strict alternate picked riff that alternates between 4/4 and 9/8 right at the end of The Crimson Sunset is a bit of a trouble and as you can hear, I made a few mistakes here and there. My biggest problem is trying to keep my tiny Jazz II pick steady while playing it! I hate large picks and really like my Jazz II, but in that riff I have absolutely no breathing time to adjust my pick, so it was pretty difficult. There's also a terrible bend in the final solo, but meh this was my best take!

Thanks for viewing the video, and comments are very much welcome. I'm aware that I'm not John Petrucci, but I'm a huge fan and I love DT's music. I plan to cover the fourth movement - The Darkest of Winters - but it'll take me a while since it's so much harder than one I did in this video!

I used my Schecter Damien 7 with stock pickups, and my PodXT Live straight into the computer's microphone input for this recording. The video was recorded by my laptop's integrated webcam (there may be some lag here and there but I think the frame rate isn't to terrible). You may notice that the background is really bright because of the sun shining in through the window. I needed the extra brightness otherwise my webcam's frame rate would drop REAAALLY low.

Enjoy, any questions feel free to ask!

  • Very nicely executed. Timing issues aside, this is a great start. Keep playing.

Also, once the power chords pick up, around 1:40, it might sound better to play them on the E and A strings. Power chords high up on the neck don't seem to have as much "power." I realize that some of those power chords need to be played on the B and E, but the first couple can be played on E and A.

  • I know what you mean. I decided to play them like how I did because it's simply easier, I don't need to shift strings. I just watched Petrucci play it on LSFNY and he actually plays it like how I did. Thanks for commenting, man! =)

  • what is your tuning?

  • Standard 7 string tuning BEADGBE.
