  • @AceFaceJarv what if the parents can't fill that role? not won't, but can't? further, what if the reason the child is failing is due in large part to the fact that they aren't eating properly, living healthy, because the family doesn't have enough resources or access? does it help to shrink the resources? either the schools are there to teach or they aren't, society raises kids, not just the parents.

  • It's Lord Jones not Lord Digby Jones. Get it right!

  • @firehot006 Their*

  • @stephentsang2000 I think AleXGT7 deleted the comment I was replying to so now my comment doesn't make any sense. I was saying that the government could take away child benefits to parents who aren't teaching there kids discipline. So randomly taking away elderly benefits has nothing to do with what I was talking about. In fairness though our pensions system is a giant ponzi scheme, it's no wonder it's all going to blow up in our face later down the line....

  • @firehot006 Why not take away the elderly benefits?

  • @AleXGT7 So take away child benefits instead? There are many ways for the government to use a carrot or a stick.

  • Digby proves the saying of the indigenous peoples of the northwest of America: "He who talks much says nothing."

  • Lord Digby clearly doesn't understand the living conditions which prevent children from learning in the first place. Why should he, does he work or even live with such people?

"Teachers would so they very good a painting, or very good at playing the oboe" I am actually disgusted by this comment. The last thing are education and young children need is more threats and pressure for enforced standardization. This man could learn a thing or two watching RSA talk - Changing Education Paradigms

  • As an employer I have to say that I feel sympathy which much of what he has to say. Some of the commentators below are missing the point entirely. DJ wasn't as far as I could see making any value judgements the way the chinese state operates - merely looking at how it's economy operates and the effect globally. You do't need to condone it to see what's happening. As for taxes supporting the public sector I don't think he specified local or national. Seems some people do think it grows on trees!

  • @horusalexrogan Well, how about instead of focusing on my barb about his obesity, you address my original complaint about "taxes supporting the public sector" and his disregard of China's corruption? If the foundation of his thesis is flawed, what value is the rest of his commentary? He does make a good point about the innumeracy/illiteracy of the populace (which I wasn't aware of, to THAT extent), so I will give him a point there.
