so extraordinairy beautiful, and so extremely haunting. I find this version of the painting exceptionally interesting, in my opinion it matches best with the music compared to the other versions. this one is just so captivating and so terribly eary. it literally draws you into that pitch black centre. I prefer this painting over the others because of the enormous threat hanging in the air. Rachmaninov captured that eary atmosphere so well, it gives me shivers. I love it. thank you for posting!

@TheVaughan5 The St. Petersburg is arguably the finest orchestra in the world, and has been for decades :-))
Having been in the audience and hearing the St.Petersburg with Jansons conducting, I found those performances to be mind-blowing and surreal - they stay with you :-)

not to be mean, but perhaps it would be more appropriate to show the b&w version, since it was that which inspired rach's piece.

Superb !
A lot of thanks

The Mariinsky Orchestra seems to get all the limelight these days because of its "star" conductor but on the evidence of this recording I am reminded that the St.Petersburg Philharmonic is still probably the finest orchestra in Russia. Wonderful performance.

I never liked Jansons before, but THIS is breathtaking!!!

Excellent performance of this wonderful work. Far too many conductors wallow in Rchmaninov's music thus depriving it of the momentum which is so vital.

I am rather puzzled as this painting shown here is slightly different from the one in part 1. Is one of them a copy?
Very curious.

Böcklin painted several versions of Isle of the Dead, and this is one of them.
