Margaret Beare, Major Street, Toronto, ON Canada resident advises local police the results of a meeting between two Major St residents, the Harbord Village Residents Association Graffiti Coordinator Colin Furness, 14 Division Graffiti Coordinator Constable Richard Rhone, Crime Stoppers Community Youth Officer/Legal Graffiti Art Coordinator Constable Scott Mills, and legal graffiti artists BUBBLZ and PHADE.

The meeting was called by the Major Street residents after a brand new garage was re-built by a local resident, and it was vandalized by graffiti shortly afterwards. A walk on the laneway reveals almost every garage door and fence vandalized.

Residents are looking to hire legal graffiti artists to legal graffiti murals (cost of buff paint/spray paint x3 .. approximately $300 per garage door).

Residents are hoping to use some money available through the Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) at 14 Division to partially fund this initiative.

Margaret took the contact information of the legal graffiti artists, and will be contacting them directly to get this project under way.

It is coming up to winter in Toronto, as this video is filmed in November/2008... The residents at the meeting hoped that a full laneway project cleaning up vandalism graffiti and promoting legal graffiti art murals can occur in the Spring of 2009.

Margaret Beare made it clear that a "RIP King ALFA" mural on one of the garage doors is a tribute to a graffiti artist who died, and is not to be buffed.

Constable Mills was able to explain to the residents at the meeting that the father of ALFA says that his son was looking for a legal graffiti opportunity since he was 12 years old in Toronto.. and couldn't find one.. and eventually was struck and killed by a freight train at Bathurst St and Dupont St spray painting illegal graffiti.

Video recorded and posted for the education of the neighbourhood and the community about the process of community building through legal graffiti art

    loved and missed

  • Build laneway housing instead. Tokyo and Vancouver do it. Having only garages on laneways pushes a fuggedaboudit attitude from their owners: save for parking cars, there's no civic pride for them. It's wasted urban space even as we try to optimise density.

Keep things as they are + invite canvases for street art (nothing wrong with that). They at least show civic pride. To Harbord-Spadina owners: if you hate it, then support laneway housing. Make some money by segmenting your lot into two.

  • what the name of the song

  • its funny alfas father is so interested in promoting his son when all his son used to do it vandalize and write fuck the police on everything. he also used to rob alot of people i hear. with knives and stuff. maybe if i say fuck the police then crime stoppers will pay to have my name remembered.

  • those look like some sick laneways. id enjoy to paint it, but maybe ill participate in another one of these projects, not this one.

    RIP Alfa
