Albany Engineering President James Besha lead a Tour of the historic Mechanicville Hydroelectric Station on the Hudson River, on Jan. 20, '07. This is the oldest continuously operating hydroelectric plant in the United States. It has run 24/7 for more than 100 years. It's so old its output is at 40 Hertz, so they change frequency with a Motor/generator set.

  • What is the two units (with the number 8 on the left side) attached to each other at time 1:11? Is that a AC to DC converter?

  • @Blacklab1 Motor Generator set for changing the Frequency.

  • This isn't a video, it's a slide show, and it's not really a tour, either. The music is obnoxious. Had to turn it off.

  • @TheMrBlinx Maybe it is a "mixed media presentation". The images where collected while Jim Besha was giving a tour of the facility.

  • Pity about the crap "music".

  • @Palifiox I had another different set of less crappy music originally, but then Youtube said I was infringing on the copyright. I added this song to the video from their list of free stuff.

  • no sound at all would be a vast improvement over the current selection..still an intresting video

  • I agree completely. I am baffled that anyone would think the music would complement the majesty of the engineering. At least speakers can be turned off.

  • @dkassaca you are probably right...

  • @lslavychecker It is still working.

  • @markelltt I dunno

  • Nice video.............. music could be improved

  • The lock and dam at Lockport Illinois looks very similar. I'm not sure who designed it.

  • What about the hydro-electric lock and dam at Lockport Illinois on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal? It was built at the same time and is still producing power.

  • WOW!! --Can they make it work again???Or it is still producing electricity...beautiful location ...
