Just read an online chat with Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro about their plans for making the two Hobbit movies. GDT said that vermithrax pejorative is (naturally) going to be one of the primary influences in their development of the look for Smaug. Just the coolest dragon in cinema. Thanks for posting.

That can only be good news! Vermithrax is perfection really (IMHO). They could do no better than to model Smaug after her. And to be honest, Smaug deserves nothing less.
