What they did was wrong. Religion should not have even been considered! Some Christians, Atheists, Agnostics, Jews or any other beliefs; do not drink. It was an excuse. Although I do think newspapers paid special attention to this story.
If it was a white Christian girls beating up a Muslim because they come from say strict Catholic families that don't drink; there is no way it would have gotten the same response. Justice should be blind to anything but the crime and intent.
I found out today that these girls were let off because the judge believed that they weren't racist & apparently the story about them not being used to drinking alcohol was made up by a tabloid! I cant understand how the judge didn't see this as a racist attack? What more could they have done to make it racist? I have some Somalian friends & they are horrified by this story. They think they will be judged harshly by the actions of these racist thugs & unfortunately I know they're right.
For what these stupid women did to the poor woman, they deserve to be in jail and out of society for the rest of their sorry miserable lives. This is the first time I have ever heard of Somali women and violence. What they did was inhumane and religion has nothing to do with. The jude was an idiot.
I'm a muslim & I'm disgusted they weren't jailed! As muslims they shouldn't hv bn drinking or fighting! Being racist is also forbidden. My muslim & non-muslim friends (black & white) all agree it ws a racist attack on that poor girl. It just doesn't make sense how their lies were believed because I very much doubt that this was the first time they got drunk or got into a fight!
I feel this blurring of the line between criticism of race and religion is totally irresponsible and dangerous in a democratic society, especially as ours is a secular society, where religion and the state are supposed to be kept separate. If we cannot criticise religions, which are essentially political in nature, then we can no longer consider ourselves a country which has freedom of speech. If only we had a first amendment as the USA does, maybe our rights would be protected from government.
I am no racist, i despise racism, discrimination against gays and mistreatment of women. but when i have criticised these attitudes within do exist within the islamic community, i have been subjected to criticism and accusations of 'racist' by my own friends. The policy makers have made it a crime to criticise 'religion', (code word for Islam), and the two unrelated concepts of race and religion have been blurred together, (in Labour's racial and religious hatred act 2006).
I totally agree with you that race or religion should not be a factor when sentencing criminals, or for that matter when hiring employees. The unfortunate truth is in 21st century Britain institutional racism is as much a factor as it was in the 1960s, except the racism is now called 'positive discrimination' and is intended to give more equality to ethnic minorities. As you are aware, it is an uncomfortable thing to criticise other cultures, especially Islam.
Acts like this don't even have anything to do with religion. Religion is completely differet than racism, abuse and all notions alike. I'm a muslim and Islam prohibts drinking. These somailans committed an act and clearly used religion as an excuse.
I would love to call them bastards but I think I'll contain myself.
