As featured on Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria. This video excerpt from a film by Dan Schreiber explores the tension between tradition and tourism in a remote region of Northern India.
Good report. Wish there were more of them. One thing we need to address is that tourists usually do not personally create the mess. The local and national government, along with local and foreign businesses create-supply the mess. The latter can always move on. The politicians retire to their estates. The local communities are stuck with the mess some of them supported and benefited from, while the rest of the community is the victim of other people's greedy madness.
always wondered why indian govt doesnt build good infrastructure (roads n all), increase security to such beautiful places (since security is always on mind, due to proximity to Pakistan which supports terrorims and abets terrorists influx in kashmir) ......then think its blessing in disguise, the more the tourism develops the culture is being lost slowly (like the loss of native indian culture in America)....how long can the culture survive, hopefully long enough
