About this piece: Meditation in E is an original composition for solo bass, and is the ninth track on my debut album, Sonorous. The idea behind this piece came from several people mentioning to me that I should make purely a meditative album; so, I wanted to have a piece on Sonorous that I deliberately tried to fit into that category. The tuning is E E A Db. My lowest string is tuned to the same low E as a bass in standard tuning. I really like the depth that the low E adds to this piece, and I think it fits the meditation theme very well! It also shows the low pitch range of piccolo strings.

I've really been having fun working on my four finger picking technique. It's kind of like the tremolo technique that guitarists use. Spanish style guitarists use tremolo often, and I have found that it opens up lots of possibilities for solo bass playing as it can really help create a full sound. The idea is to be plucking higher notes rapidly while your thumb does arpeggios.

Anyway, I hope you guys like Meditation in E and thanks to everyone who has bought my album! : )

  • So can you put Piccolo strings on and still play in standard bass tuning? as in E1, A1, D1, G1. If you can that is so handy :D

  • @Onslaught261

i would not recommend that. one or two strings might be ok, but it is harder to tune down an octave with the thinner D and G strings - they go really floppy.

  • @Zander4724

So you find it alright to tune to the low E but the other strings should stay higher?

  • @Onslaught261

the A string might be OK as well, but that's as far as I'd go! also, the lowest i'd tune for standard fourths for all the strings would probably be A D G C (tenor bass tuning).

Okay thanks that helps a lot :) I bought your tabs book and cd, I should have at least one song learned in the next ten years :L

  • @Onslaught261

thanks for your support and good luck with the tunes! : )
