Friedensreich Hundertwasser (Friedrich Stowasser) was an Austrian painter and architect. He became one of the best-known contemporary Austrian artists, although controversial, by the end of the 20th century.
In the early 1990s students of the Martin Luther King Schule - working on an art project how the appearance of the building could be improved - invited Friedensreich Hundertwasser for advise. The original school building of this Gymnasium was a rather typical East German style plattenbau, which was commonly used for school buildings throughout the DDR.
Hundertwasser worked out the design free of charge as his contribution to the democratic changes in the East.
