Thats because they have similar conservative views as straight conservatives, but have a more liberal approach to social issues. Its also a known fact(well, most believe this), that Lincoln, was a Social Liberal, and a fiscal conservative who believed in liberty, freedom, equality, and responsibility. The party is not so inclusive, but does allow openly-gay officials to be elected despite orientation. Democrats don't support gay marriage either, both parties are the same on the issue. :)

Why does everyone think that gay and republican are incompatible? Think outside the box. I'm of italian desent and soon be jewish. Remember Abe Lincoln and his beliefs for civil rights and liberty for all. Change has to be introduced in small amounts. The world is not black and white but consists of many gray areas.

Guess what - Gays, women, Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Arabs, etc. all have diverse views in politics despite the little boxes liberals put them in. All different sorts of people are both for and against gay marriage - including many gay folks like Elton John who said, "Civil Unions are for gay people - marriage is for heterosexuals". Liberals just have to make every single political discourse about 'racism', or 'homophobia' or 'sexism'. Not that those things don't exist, but they're not exclusive to any one group. Anyone can be those things, no matter how they self identify. That's why it's best to judge people as individuals.
