ASL is more of a proper form of Sign that is "Established", kind of like proper English (which not many people speak). It is all grammar, structure, and formally based. If memory serves me right, it was "Established" so that was it could get a formal language accreditation. There are a number of requirements that a language has to meet before it is considered formal academically. English Sign has alot more "slang", "Home" signs, and regionally known signs.

what's the difference between American and English signing? I can't find a reference to English on the net. Unless, English refers to signing in the same sentence structure as a spoken sentence?

ASL kitchen is COOK ROOM. Initializing the sign with a K is signed English, not ASL.
