The prevoius speaker is definitley right. Hagen in Wagner`s Götterdämmerung is Frick`s most remakable and outstanding role and this very recording one of the strongest portrayals.

There are two qualities I love about Gottlob Frick's Hagen: first, his pitch wanders outside the lines slightly (I think this works equally well for someone playing Alberich, as it's all part of the slyness and angst of their personae); and, second, he often sings with his mouth to the side, crooked like the character of Hagen. Just from observing his drawn, darkly-hewn features, and watching him portray the role, one would almost imagine the part was written specifically for him.

MY RESPECT TO THE GREATEST HAGEN OF ALL TIME.

@unethicaldenier not sure, but he did star as Hagen in the 1964 DG Solti Ring recording of Gotterdammerung, that was GOOD!

His recordings with Wunderlich are not to be missed. They were a perfect match.
In my humble opinion this is the greatest Bass we have recorded singing Wagner... the voice is 'as black as the earl of hells waistcoat'. Bravo!!!
