@whitfield1944 Surely Frances Line's entire mission at Radio 2 was to increase the amount of stuff from the 1940s-50s. And very boring it was during her stewardship too.
my chronology is not confused francis lines, did not ever introduce sounds of the fifties, francis lines was the controller of radio 2 at that time ... not a presenter... the late ronnie hilton, presented this programme, this isnt the first time that robin carmody has got ihis facts incorrect, i new the late ronnie hilton very well, and keep in touch with his widow who i also know, so its not my chronology thats confused ,... its robin carmodys chronology thats again incorrect,
sounds of the fifties was introduced by ronnie hilton, in the 1982, on radio 2 francis line was the cotroller of radio 2 this i do know as i have recordings of some of these programmes on tape , the show came from the bbc studios in manchester,
Sounds of the Fifties was *introduced* by Frances Line in 1990 and dropped in 1995, towards the end of her time at the station. She considerably increased the amount of 1940s & 50s music being played. It was *after* her time - from 1996 onwards under Jim Moir - that the station moved away from the music of that era.
yes it was frances line who ruined bbc radio 2. i along with lotsof other listeners used to enjoy ....sounds of the fiftys...on a saturday morning with the late ronnie hilton, untill frances line became controller of bbc radio 2 , sounds of the fiftys was given the chop, and sounds of the 60s, was given extra airtime, since then bbc radio 2 does not cater for singers from the 1940s or 1950s, with the exception of desmond carrington, and thats it, bbc radio, certanly isnt light entertainment ?
on the opening night when tyne tees tv started broadcasting january the 15th,1959 the four announcers were adrian cairns, james lloyd, sally morton, and tom coyne.
@whitfield1944 Yes the announcer is James Lloyd but i just call him Dad, he lives in Australia now. Happy days and he still had all his own teeth.

You've got your chronology confused.

The same James Lloyd who, as Jim Lloyd, later presented Folk on 2 for BBC Radio 2, as well as being married to its then controller Frances Line.
