Katie Lee is a 2 year old labrador mix female. The person that dropped her off at our shelter told the ACO that she was a stray. With her twisted front legs, the ACO didn't hold out much hope on anyone stepping up to take her. Hilltop Haven Animal Rescue director, Delsie Williams, happened to stop in the shelter the day that Katie Lee was dropped off and the rest is history. "Once I saw her sweet face and she greeted me at the kennel door, I knew in my heart I had to save her. If it meant her coming home with me for the rest of her life, I promised this precious soul that she would not die on my watch. I immediately made a phone call to the "Guardian Of the Shelter Dogs", Kim Morgan with Jellstone Bark's Rescue Rangers in Oswego, Illinois. I described Katie Lee to her and she said she would try, but she too was not sure anyone would want to take on an adult dog in her condition. If it had been a puppy then the deformity could have possibly been corrected.

After posting Katie Lee's picture out to the rescue groups Kim and I sat with fingers crossed and prayers being sent to heaven that someone would see past her tiny, twisted legs and see the beauty in her. Kim finally received the life saving email. It came from Karen Congdon with WAAGR in Wisconsin. Karen told Kim that a good friend of hers and fellow rescuer Lisa Young with Furry Bottoms rescue also in Wisconsin was willing to step up and help.

HHAR then picked Katie Lee up from the shelter and brought her home with us. She immediately started making friends with our dogs and the foster dogs that we already were housing. Our german shepherd Sarge paid close attention to Katie Lee to make sure that no one tried to bully her. The very next morning, Katie Lee jumped in the front seat of the Sprinter van and away we went to meet with her rescuer in Bloomingdale. Not only Katie Lee, but 36 other dogs were also saved from high kill shelters in Kentucky and Indiana. One of our special riders was a dog named Rags. A one-eyed norwich terrier from JB Ogle in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Jellystone Bark's Rescue Rangers had saved 75 dogs the Saturday that Katie Lee made her freedom voyage. All 76 babies would have been euthanized if it weren't for the love and compassion of animals that Kim Morgan has. This is a mission that we started together over two years ago and it just keeps growing every week. If you would like to join us in saving shelter babies, please email me delsw7@aol.com. Approximately 3500 dogs per year are saved from high kill shelters and puppy mill survivors because of one friendship that was made two years ago between a woman desperate for help in Kentucky and a woman wanting to help in Illinois. Kim Morgan and Delsie Williams are those two women!

  • This story is so heart warming....it makes me so happy to know that there are still people in the world that care and look past the differences and see the beauty inside.... This girl is such a sweet pea and I know she will be very happy now. Thank you all so much for saving her....
