Wayne Henderson - bluegrass guitar - August 4, 2008

OH JOY! I was privileged to hear one of my favorite bluegrass musicians, Wayne Henderson, play at a benefit for the Agape Food Pantry on August 4, 2008. Here he is ... picking with Helen White, a very talented musician in her own right.

Wayne Henderson is a true American original. He is a world-class guitar builder of acoustic guitars in the C.F. Martin tradition. Eric Clapton and Doc Watson own his guitars, although Clapton like to never got his ... or so the story goes. Please go to his web site for that funny tale. He is also a world-class guitar player. Wayne Henderson is originally from a tiny town called Rugby in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where it is said that the population of Rugby is seven and always has been.

Wayne Henderson's favorite joke goes something like this: "How do you build a guitar? You get yourself some good wood, some nice rosewood or mahogany, and a nice Appalachian spruce top. And you get yourself a sharp penknife. And then you cut away everything that doesn't look like a guitar."

The Steel Guitar Rag was one of my Uncle Louie's favorite songs. But when you put a loud speaker on you house at Christmas to play music for the neighbors then come home feelin your oats at 3:00 in the mornin. Well all I can say is the neighbors didn't want to hear the Steel Guitar Rag at 3:00 in the morning and the Police responded. They were nicer back then and asked him to please stop. He did and no jail time was served. He would have loved your Guitar playing Wayne!
