Q: Why does it got to be so loud?
A: Because Syd's amplifier goes up to 11.
-
The real question is: why is the string quartet so blasted QUIET?
-
@TheSnowballEarth Or death metal...
-
because the loud is very loud, hahaha
-
Orchestras are VERY loud
-
Moral of the story? Roger Waters didn't grow up in The String Quartet, blow him.

And of course 'by then' there was all sorts of WILD longhair music... like Bartok, Schoenburg, loud strident stuff...rioting over Stravinsky had already been decades in the past. I think it must have been more the style/sensibility of the music more than just the loudness. - I bet my initial reaction to punk was prob really not all that different.

A clash of cultures, right in your homeland.
My initial impression was, well at least he's letting them speak.
I've seen 2 or 3 such early things from England. While at the time in America I think television hosts on talk shows etc were either ignoring heavy rock or making fun of it. By giving them a format it's almost taking the music seriously by default. (Could be wrong about that...)

If you hear Syd's response it makes his desmise even sadder. He was a bright, well spoken and level headed guy. Before he lost his mind.
since I've read it somewhere I always understand this:
0:02 "for me frankly it's too loud, I just can't Barrett"
:D

The interviewer obviously never listened to The Who. Or Motorhead.
