Actress Hayley Atwell, ambassador for Christian Aid, travels to Jinotega in Nicaragua to see the success story of Soppexcca. The organisation is a cooperative of more than 700 producers encouraged by Christian Aid to secure a fair price for coffee grown on their land.
She meets community leader Gustavo Talavera, who helped build a school in his village with profits from coffee, and his niece Martha, whose work with Soppexcca is helping to pay for her to train to be a nurse.
I was a volunteer at Soppexcca in 2007 and was happy to see footage from Ms. Atwell's visit. It reminds me of what a great organization Soppexcca is. I'm familiar with some other NGOs in the area that waste foreign aid, but I can attest from three months of being there every day that everyone at Soppexcca is an expert in their field, works tirelessly, and always has the benefit of the small producer and the producer's children in mind. It was exhausting to be a volunteer there, but wonderful too
