Hello on this Tuesday, August 21, 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline update.
Hurricane Dean has made landfall in Mexico, but has already weakened in strength. Early this morning, the category 5 storm hit the country's Yucatan coast, bringing 165 mile per hour winds. Residents in some areas are without power and dealing with as much as 20 inches of rain. As Dean crosses the Yucatan Peninsula now, forecasters say it's a category 3 storm but they say it will strengthen again as it re-emerges into the Gulf of Mexico.
The remains of the last missing person in that Minneapolis bridge collapse have been recovered. That brings the official death toll to 13. The man was a construction worker who was helping to resurface the bridge when it fell earlier this month. Meanwhile, the governor of Minnesota is asking President Bush to declare the collapse a major disaster, which would make the state eligible for more federal money. Bush is scheduled to be in Minneapolis today to receive a briefing on the bridge.
Space shuttle Endeavour may be landing today at the Kennedy Space Center. NASA managers say they're evaluating weather conditions at Kennedy before clearing Endeavour to return to Earth. The landing has been moved up a day because of concerns involving Hurricane Dean and its possible impact on mission control facilities at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is waiting to hear if he'll play professional football again. This comes one day after pleading guilty to federal conspiracy charges involving an illegal dogfighting operation. An NFL spokesman says the league is conducting its own review of the case and is considering what sanctions, if any, should be imposed on the 27-year-old. Vick will reportedly appear next week in federal court in Richmond, Virginia to enter the plea.
