I love Elton John, but this concert did more harm than good to Chichen Itza and in particular the Kukulcan. The sound system was so loud that it caused some internal structures within the pyramid to collapse and some of the internal chambers were damaged. The constant vibrations did other damage to other parts of the Chichen Itza site. Concerts should not be held beside structures that have a significant importance to the world, these structures need to be preserved.

I'm pretty sure this is not what they Mayans intended. Even if I like Elton John I think I would cry if I saw this. And people wonder why there is so much disharmony and discord in this world.
Did you go to Mexico and Chichen Itza special for this Elton John concert? Cool place for a concert!
For the people complaining about doing a concert there...relax. It's not like the stage was set up ON the pyramid. The entire city wasn't or isn't a holy place... just the temple. Back in its day the city was used for many purposes, including entertainment (they played games at the Great Ball Court).
Check out my Cancun, Mexico video to see some of my Chichen Itza pictures (I went in 2008).

@12Shilo12 I was spending the winter in Playa Del Carmen and heard about this concert. So we rented a van and went to see it live.....the lighting was amazing, Elton John was of course very good but it was a very conservative audience. Tickets were expensive too!

Makes me sick to my stomach, worst use of a sacred site ever!

@captaindebris I don't think it was that bad. I can see your point though but I think it's always a tough balance between encouraging tourism and protecting it. I don't think they crossed the line. Thanks for checking out the video!
