Eastman Kodak, the US-based company which brought photography to the masses over a century ago, has filed for bankruptcy protection after years of failing to become a profitable seller of modern consumer products.

The 130-year-old photographic film pioneer said it had also obtained a $950m loan from Citigroup, the US financial firm, to help keep it going.

Al Jazeera's Azhar Sukri reports.

  • does this change the definition of a Kodak moment?

  • wow..so sad...as an indian, growing up, all our pictures were taken with kodak camera and film reel..every camera/photography store where they wash the film reel, there would be a ton of kodak posters and ads around...it used to be a hosuehold name in india..but now, in the digital age, everyone uses a digital Camera....makes me miss the old times..i used to be one of the only teenagers with their own camera growing up..my friends would envy me.lol

  • Files for Bankruptcy protection! NOT GOES BANKRUPT! Get it right.

  • How could such a great company go bankrupt?

They are hiring dumb stupid people and making some products that suck ass.

Canon well image stabilizer zoom wideangle screens High def video etc.. they always come out with something new.

Kodak well I have tons of idead for them but they do not have a good rep and ideas.. very sad.

  • This just in!! The Kodak Film company has filed for bankruptcy......More details to come as the story develops

  • Kodak will be smaller ...but stronger - digital capture is not a strong business and cash generator... therefore the business model will change.... the past can't be changed but I am convinced that Kodak will recover. Thanks,

  • this is sad

  • They should look at fujifilm for inspiration.

  • hearing this news make me so sad.. to be honestly, i grow up using kodak as my film.. better than using fuji film until digital camera was invented..
