MTU engined Class 43 No. 43296 leads the 14:00 London Kings Cross-Aberdeen service out of York, whilst Paxman Valenta engined 43105 powers at the rear on 29th May 2008. Which do you think has the most thrash?

  • Good riddens to the Valenta, noisy polluting things.

  • @jonoharris333 - Yeah! Lets switch to those nuclear powered electric trains, they are so much cleaner!

  • EMD engines from North America are the best for sound. They use some in India, modified and called WDP4. Amazing sound. The best of any diesel

  • I've got to disagree. The Napier Deltic engine fitted to the British Railways Class 55 Deltic and Nasty Class Navy ships is the best sound in the world! Check out my video 'Deltic 22 Departs Durham' for a taster. Regards,

  • well i have 2 points to make

    1. valentas sound alot better.

2 MTUs are good because there saving HSTs from scrap ans store.

  • I know, I was just joking earlier. I don't think they sound too bad really. And I would rather have one of these MTUs than a Voyager, Maridian or Pendolino anyday! I only hope that at least one set of the Valenta version is saved. Cheers!

  • Good video, thanks. For those leaving comments about engine sound check out `55022 departing York with two tone'. Not only are the Deltic engines in good condition but there is slight engine speed instability on the governors as the driver `notches up' making the sound less boring than the constant droan most Deltics appear to make. This is the best Deltic video I've seen on YT for sound.

  • @Xantec the XPT no longer uses Valentas it uses VP185s like the EMT HST fleet and the ex emt east coast set

  • @HSTHoward yes i agree

  • no doubt valenta wins hands down

  • I live in Bristol and I grew up within earshot of Valenta powered HST's slogging up Somerdale bank towards Keynsham. You could hear them for miles on a good day. For me there is no comparison. I don't dislike the MTU engines as they remind me of class 37's and the iconic 47's which I have to say are my favourite engines. Long may the HST live.

  • @philquine

Watch 'WDP4's EMD Horn Silences Magpie-Robin's Song '

    Thats my favourite diesel loco
