Hi all,

on the 28th of August I went to Bressingham Steam Museum, they were expecting a new arival in the form of a class 09 Diesel shunter. The loco' weighs in at 24 tonnes so quite a task to unload it! I'm seriousley glad they decided to use the tractor unit to brake the loco' instead of the 1/2 tonne winch block they were planning on, that could have been nasty....

Luckily all went to plan and the class 09 landed on the deck after about an hour.

For anyone interested, the diesel statonary engine is a high speed R.A Lister LR1 with electric start and running a hydraulic pump. Noisy without the silencer!

The locomotive didn't appear to have an engine in it but it should have a Gardner 6L3 or about 160HP, a very impressive lump and nice to work on too.

The other locomotive is a Ruston and Hornsby shunter, and I think you'l agree; couldn't have sounded better.

Hope you enjoy the video....

  • I have to say, I agree with annother contributor here, that chain was rather .... lightweight, and the decent was not under control. What if the chain broke, all those people & children nearby, doesn't bear thinking about!

  • Yes, the "technique" here is not the propper way to do it. Thankfully all went to plan.

You might be worried to know that they were originaly going to use a 1/2 tonne chain hoist to slow it down the ramps....thank goodness they didn't.

  • That Black Diesel Is Mavis

  • Thank you for telling me. I should know really as I helped overhaul the engine in a Drewry loco.....

  • The loco's not a class 09 BTW, they're much bigger, identical to an 08. This is an ex-industrial loco' built by Drewry, a smaller version of their 0-6-0 class 03/04 loco's

  • Typical Bressingham job! No-one had a clue what they were doing and lives were put at risk. What would have happened if that puny chain gave way when they were dropping it off the back of the low-loader, it wasn't exactly a controlled descent to begin with, and where was the banksman?? Then some twit decides to drive his 4x4 across the path of the loco' as it was about to back down. They can count themselves bloody lucky no-one was hurt! I would love to know what the HSE would make of this.

  • Thanks : )
