in New York we don't have those announcements... but, our ppl here in New York are assholes anyways...

It is because the London system is so complex some parts are very old, and they can't modify them to reduce the gap. So normally you don't have a gap, and then at occasional stations you have a big one, that might surprise some people.

I went to London in March 2002, and my favorite part was riding the underground. Some stations had the announcement "mind the gap". My family stayed at High Street Kensington, and there is no such announcement. Also, that station is partially "open air" instead of fully enclosed. London's trains are still GREAT!
