LungA´s predecessor was a festival named Hljómstefna, first held in 1998. The idea of the festival focused on people interested in music, but the ideology was the same as LungA, that is, to combine various musicians in music making and boost peoples interest in music. The festival contained musical education, synchronization and concerts. Events held alongside the festival were open to everyone and courses were open to all musicians. The festival lived through two consecutive years, but in 2000 the festival was changed with more effort put into widening the idea and focus on working with young people at the ages between 16 and 25 years old.
LungA is created.
Young people in Seyðisfjörður were unhappy with hobbies available, the only recreation that was available for young people were dances and other night-time musical hobbies and many thought it was getting tiresome and wanted a change. They decided to establish a festival for young people. This group consisted of four persons, Stefán Benedikt, Halldóra Malin, Ólafur Ágústsson and Björt Sigfinnsdóttir. Aðalheiður Borgþórsdóttir, a coordinator of culture and tourism in Seyðisfjörður, helped them evolve the festival. The local youth had to be convinced, as well as the sponsors. Fit and able guides had to be hired to control the workshops. To many the term art was repellent, a change of peoples hearts had to be made. One of the main goals the group had was to increase public interest in arts and culture and erase the prejudice that seemed to rule among the people.
In the first festival around 20 youngsters participated in art courses and it proved hard to get kids to participate in the workshops. The reasons were mainly of financial kind, kids couldnt, or wouldnt sacrifice work. Of course there were also other kinds of reasons but it was absolutely necessary that the festival would be introduced and ice had to be broken because of the aforementioned prejudice against the term art. The executive committee has put a lot of effort into bringing costs down so that more people can participate. Therefore, this festival is very dependent on financial support and luckily many have helped in that area.
LungA is first and foremost a festival with the purpose of summoning people in creation and to strengthen awareness and knowledge about art and culture. LungA is a terrific venue for those are thinking of further art studying or teaching at art schools.
