I think it was perfect, really sad but perfect. People always wants "happily ever after"

"La Sola" means The only One in italian. "La" (the) = art. def. sing. feminine ( yes..in my language even the articles must have a gender!) Sola (only) = substantive (noun), sing. feminine. Many Kisses from Verona ^^

There are five modern languages arise from latin: Italian - Spanish - Portuguese - French and Romanian!
I don't know if the italian is the nearest at the original latin, is possible, after all, the latin was spoken by Romans.

I wish I could put this song in my head and play it when I'm dying. Gonna be epic.

It's not totaly true, "LA SOLA" in italian got more than a meaning, it could be, like u already said: "THE ONLY ONE" but it also mean "ALONE".
I think "Alone" works good.
She noe is alone cuz her love has died this is what the song want to tell.
IMHO.

This as BGM makes everything--FB, news, programming, etc-- seem gloomy.

I think that it would better fit as a translation: "For me, the lonely one who has you no more..." rather than: "For me, the only one who has you no more...". So the title could be translated as "The lonely one" ^^
