Imagine pre-historic man doing the same thing. Probably, unintentionally noticing the differing pitches of things he was banging on, and from there music was born!

It would be interesting to see if the stones sound more when suspended. If the sand (+ ground?) is the resonator, it doesn't make it easy to record in studio, nor to perform live!

Yes, that is exactly the idea. Climbing up the sides of the cliffs, the stones clatter beneath one's feet and very noticeably create incidental melodies.
Also, when someone else is climbing up in a box canyon, you can hear the rocks play beneath their feet from far away.
Experiencing all this, it's clear that the ancients who lived there, a few of whom were my ancestors, did just what I am doing here.
Just across from the canyon I am atop of, they built an enormous parabolic amplifier.
