Anita Bryant Gets A Street Named After Her (Facing The Wrong Way) - 5/28/05

By all rights, Anita Bryant should have been born in Oklahoma City. But she arrived a month late, not breathing and "black with poison" at her grandparents' house in Barnsdall. The doctor declared her dead, this baby who would become Miss Oklahoma of 1958, Miss America runner-up of 1959, a founder of the religious right movement and Public Enemy No. 1 of gay activists in 1977. But her grandfather, John Berry, would have none of that talk of death in 1940: They plunged her head in ice water, and she began to breathe. On May 28, 2005 she was honored by the community of Barnsdall, Oklahoma during their 100th birthday celebration by having her serve as the Grand Honorary Marshall of the Bigheart Day Parade and naming one of the city's major thoroughfares as "Anita Bryant Avenue."

Growing up in the 70s as a minister son, Anita was the first I realized that there were evil Christians.

She would wrap up her hate speech with a pray to Jesus. She set me on my road away from Christ and towards being an Atheist.

This is what's called Karma, people. She sang for our troops, sang in packed arenas, became a household name as an orange juice spokeswoman, performed at the White House for two Presidents, made millions of dollars, and was a role model for young women and girls all across the country.

And then she went on hateful crusade against the gays, and it's 34 years, three bankruptcies, one divorce, two failed ministries, two failed career revivals, and 20 people showing up to watch you here..
