Arbaeen (Muharram, Ashura) in Dearborn; Iraqi-American Shias walk for Imam Hussain

After a 2-mile walk through snow, up to 5,000 Shia Muslims gather in a Dearborn park on Feb. 15, 2009, to perform latmiya. The crowd was the largest since the annual Arabeen parades started in 2004. It was a vivid display of the growth of metro Detroit's Shia community.

Harming oneself (chest-beating, whipping oneself, etc.) is haram in Islam, as is making charicatures of religious figures. I don't get how this can be considered Sunnah among Shi`a madhhab.
