@Hendrikdevuile Stars were navigation, people travelled by using stars as directional pointers.....he was a wandering cowboy with no general direction or purpose...hence "man without a star".
I always remembered a movie i saw almost 50 years ago as a kid that had something to do with Kurt Douglass and his hatred of barbed wire. I've been waiting all these years to see it again. Great western.
Hendrikdevuile I am a babyboomer and have kept that opinion since I first saw the movie when it came out and before the invention of an Internet Movie Data Base.
Let's look at Dempsey Rae a Man without any real home or Family just a lone Gun fighter just listen to the classic western's like Shane and the Magnificent Seven they are just the same because they cannot afford to change and they know it ; that is why Dempsey wanted something better for the Kid I hope this helps.
@tss77 I wonder if you you got your interpretation from the IMDb:"Dempsey Rae, a cowboy with no clear aim in life, winds up....". When stars are mentioned in westerns the word almost invariably refers to the badge of legal authority and Kirk does, in fact, dispense justice here right from the start when he reveals the real train murderer. Maybe the title is deliberately ambiguous, but I don't think "he doesn't have a star" is a set phrase signifying aimlessness even in the States.
@Hendrikdevuile he doesnt have a star because back then people used the stars to reach a destination, and Douglass' character had no particular direction
Hendrikdevuile I think if you watched the whole movie you discovered the title did not have to do with a badge the star part means which path or road in life a Man takes for good or bad.

I have seen this movie for the first time 52 years ago in a suburb cinema (revolver kitchen) and I am happy to watch it this evening. Thanks again
