  • FIFA changes their rules evey year. According to the 2006/2007 Laws of the Game, one of the new offside situations is: Gaining an advantage by being in that postion means playing a ball that rebounds to him off a goal post or the crossbar having been in an offside position, OR PLAYING A BALL THAT REBOUNDS TO HIM OFF AN OPPONENT HAVING BEEN IN AN OFFSIDE POSITION. If you check other angles, the Canadian player was offside when Onyewu heads the ball.

  • exactly, REBOUNDS, but Onyewu intended to PASS it to the keeper....

  • oh well u say were the us n copa america..ok let me asku a question..weres donovan.onyewu.bocanegra.dempsey.hejduk.beasley.howard.ching.convey.well these r our star players..n sadly their clubs called back for them so they couldnt play at c.america..n cailin09..according to the ref..the balled wasnt played by onyewu or in other words, he didnt mean to header the ball back..according to the ref the ball was deflected ..so there was an offsides

  • well, the ref was WRONG!

  • yes but it cosedered offsides if the bal is deflected on a defender..jus look at other games n calls like this one r always made..usa colombia was one..usa vs italy was another oh well it happens

  • but, onyewu tried to pass it to the keeper.

  • Most of you (on both sides) seem to have missed the point that the video poster made about the offside goal and that is that it doesn't matter that the American deflected or intended to pass the ball. What matters is that Hutchinson was onside at the time the Canadian midfielder made the pass. As he was onside, it doesn't matter if the ball struck all eleven American players, all 6 posts on both nets before getting to the striker. He was onside when the last Canadian touched the ball

  • It's comments like yours that give the rest of us Americans a bad name.

And people wonder why most of the world hates us? Because of a few jackholes like you. Go figure....

  • Kasus suap refree

They pay the refree so us wins

  • Hey the rule is it was offside but once bouce off the defender the offside should have been declined so i speak for all canadians we were robbed like if u agree>>:P

  • Learn the laws of the game before spewing forth. The player was in offside position when it was played by the team mate (SaintsCanada), and Onyewu's attempted & failed play on the ball did not interrupt the offside. PLENTY of ignorance in here.

  • @commissionville - the ref made a very reasonable call. Whether a wild swing of the foot or a wild attempt to head the ball clear, the judgment is whether or not the player played the ball in a controlled manner. Take Onyewu out of the equation and the ball bounces to the keeper - the Canadian player was CLEARLY in offside position. Any argument that Onyewu meant to head the ball where it went is simply wishful thinking by people who want to feel they were cheated here. They weren't cheated.

  • I was at that game. All the Mexicans were cheering for Canada. It was USA vs Canada then it was Mexico vs Guadalupe.

  • @GPC25 No. He was even which means NOT OFFSIDE.

  • @GPC25 Doesn't matter where he is when Onyewu touches the ball. The offside law is VERY clear that you can only be offside at the moment the ball is played by a TEAM-MATE. This was onside. The worst part was that the referee who should easily see the ball was headed by a US player didn't even go converse with his assistant! Ridiculously cowardly by the ref. Hard to blame the asst. -- it would be very difficult from his position to see who's head it came off -- but the ref could.
