HITCH-KICK DEVELOPMENT:
This is a 16 year old long jumper with a personal best of 6.12m. He has been using a stride jump up until the end of this competitive season. He is quick so I have decided that the time is right to introduce him to the one and a half hitch-kick.
It's going to take months of hard work to get him to learn this new technique. Obviously, he will end up with his 'style'. His unique interpretation of the basic movement pattern.
Its up to me to ensure that his style is mechanically sound and obeys simple bio-mechanical principles.
He has had a few sessions before the one seen demonstarted in this short film clip.
He is coming in from 2/3 strides using a low flat take-off platform. His remit was to lift from the plaform and use the assist to get into a wide shape immediately after take-off THEN switch his legs over at the apex of the flight phase.
REMEMBER: He is only SHAPING the skill and beginning to understand the movement patterns of the technique.
One thing I did ask him was to ensure that the free leg [his right leg] was driven downwards and backwards when exchanging and was as LONG and FIRM as he could make it. He did this almost immediately.
