My wife's a big knitter. Among her many tools are an Ashford Umbrella Swift (on the right) and a Wool Winder. A skein (loose coil) of yarn is looped in the swift, and then twisted into a tight ball by the winder. Though my wife has to put together this contraption, my daughter can operate it.

Cool, The Ashford was way too pricey for me,,,,, I lucked out with mine with a coupon code for Joanns.com.
