If you're having trouble opening your .jar files(downloads as a .rar or .zip) make sure you are opening it with java. Right click the file, go to properties, click change next to "opens with" and change it to java or click browse and locate your java.exe
If you don't know where the java.exe is try C:/program files/java/jre6 or 7/bin/java.exe
As Wailot6 mentioned "NOTE its important that the file you downloaded is named "minecraft" and not minecraft(1) or something!"

"Hey guys Rorik here with my first minecraft tutorial after the games official release.
Since Jeb has taken over the position as Lead Developer, he has been posting development snapshots which is like a beta version of minecrafts next update.
Please take caution by backing up all of your valuable minecraft files before proceeding with this tutorial.
-With that being said, I'll now be going over the steps you need to take in order to update your client to the development build.
-In the description of this video you will find a download link for minecraft.jar.
-Save it to somewhere easy to work with like your desktop or a new folder.
-Next you will need to navigate to your .minecraft folder. Now the easiest way to do this is by holding down your windows key and then press R. Type "%appdata%\.minecraft". Hit enter, and the folder will appear.
-Open the bin folder and remove the minecraft.jar as well as any other version stored.
-Place the minecraft.jar you just downloaded inside the bin folder to replace the one you just deleted.
-Thats it! Last thing to do is to test Minecraft. I'll launch the game and create a world quick. Great, the world loaded so that's good enough confirmation for me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the next part of this tutorial I'll show you how to setup a server for you and your friends to test the development build on.
-Go back into the description of this video and follow the link to download the minecraft server file.
-You will need to place this into it's own folder and then simply open it.
-It will generate a handful of errors saying that it failed to open numerous files which is a good thing because it will create them for you.
-Once it tells you that it's done you can close it if you would like to edit the server files, otherwise you're ready to start testing the new development build!
