It's easy to forget this sort of thing. I find it helpful to examine my own behavior, in making a purchase, as it forces me to think about what potential customers go through when they look at our company.
Frankly, there are very few people / companies I interact with, who I don't "check out" online before engaging.

Absolutely true... and I agree, often forgotten.. In fact, I recall finding the website of a band that I was a fan of, and found that it was almost two years out of date. Now, I KNEW that they were a going concern -in fact, had read something about them in the paper that prompted me to look up their website, but nonetheless, for quite some time, I couldn't help thinking of them as somehow defunct or 'stale'... In that sense NO web presence can be better than an outdated one

There's an important lesson in there. It's easy to create a website, blog, Twitter feed, et cetera, et cetera... but, it's much more difficult to stay on top of these things and keep updating them.
Most would be wise to consider the time investment they can really make, before employing some of these tools. As you've noted, it's often better to have something little (or nothing at all), instead of something that's doing damage.

Absolutely true, and often forgotten. Even by myself.
