@applessuace youre kidding right? there were samurai who could cut musket bullets when they were being shot at them. why do you think it took hundreds of years to be able to kill the samurai? because they were the greatest. could defeat men with rifles until modern guns came. the samurai were on a whole other level. they had a sixth sense for battle. in europe they had heavy longswords and bashed people. in japan they killed with one single strike. oh yea. im white too. but i know better.

@xaxie1 As mentioned below, he is already a long-time soldier. Also, some people are naturals, whether in baseball, piano, or swordsmanship. He was doing a lot of training with extremely competent swordsmen. And finally, who said his attackers were samurai? They were quite possibly hired thugs from amongst the criminals common to every society. There you have it: Four reasons this scene was totally plausible. And if that's not good enough, listen to AMER1C0. It's a movie dude, relax! :)

I actually think that the mixture Tom Cruise's character has of american cavalry man swordsmanship and the Kendo/Samurai way makes him more dangerous then other samurai. He seems faster and more unpredictable then someone who was taught only one style.
